Notes on Kite Aerial Photography: Others

Bob Pebly
Boca Raton, Florida

Rob Pebly's KAP Rig, derived from Brooks Leffler's Better Brownie Box Mk. VI (34K jpg, November 1996).

I first heard from Bob Pebly about a year ago and it has been fun following his experiences as he becomes increasingly interested in kite aerial photography. First, he built a low cost rig that used a timer to take single images from disposable camera. Then he adapted a non-disposable camera to the rig. That was followed by the development of the radio-controlled rig shown opposite. The rig uses Futaba radio gear, S148 standard-size servos, and RC car gears for the plan rotation servo. Bob is shooting with the venerable YashicaT4 these days - it is a really fine KAP camera. The aerial shots shown below have been taken with this new setup.

Two views of Florida's Atlantic shore (49K jpg left and 30K jpg right, November 1996).

The lefthand image shows kids playing in the low afternoon sunlight on Delray Beach. The specs out at the surfline are surfers waiting for the next good wave. The righthand image is from the April 1996 Miami Beach Kite Festival and shows several Flowforms anchoring a sea of line laundry.

Two views of a small park in Lake Worth, Florida (51K jpg left and 59K jpg right, November 1996).

These near plan views capture palm trees and their shadows. I believe the photographer can be seen in the middle of the lefthand image.

A look back toward the intercoastal waterway from the Ft. Worth park (58K jpg, November 1996).

The entire state of Florida is near sea level and this flat landscape is dominated by water. Here the view turns inland from the ocean's edge to capture the virtually continuous waterway between the barrier island beaches and the mainland.

In a recent Aerial Eye article, Bob Pebly offered several observations from the perspective of self-professed rookie. The following Peblyisms certainly ring true in my experience:

In more recent times Bob has posted the WWW-based Bob Pebly's Kite Site.
