Vol. 4, No. 1, Winter 1998 (50K jpg)

Issue thirteen, with 32 pages, addresses Lines, Tails, and Trains.  The issue includes a fine article by Brooks Leffler describing a sail stayed stereo KAP rig inspired by Carl Bigras and Christian Becot.  There is also an article by Simon Harbord describing his experience shooting a Scottish estate. This issue included seven pages of letters to the editor - one of my favorite sections of the newsletter because of the sense of community the letters convey.

Issue fourteen, again 32 pages, is organized around the theme of "how to build it". A safety editorial in this issue by Steve Eisenhauer was a precipitating factor for the safety pages under construction for this WWW site.  Predictably clear articles by Brooks Leffler detail his approach to building a timer-controlled low cost rig and modifying servos for continuous rotation. Ralph Beutnagel's article about his approach to airborne video almost makes me want to get serious about a video viewfinder. Kudos too to Craig Wilson for his aerial view of Frank Lloyd Wright's curvilinear forms in the aerial gallery section.

Issue fifteen, returning to 24 pages, addresses the issue of safety while taking photographs from kites. The high point of the issue, however, was an article by Brooks Leffler describing his monopost III ™  camera cradle design. The article is a model of clear exposition and the design a fresh departure from the familiar u-brackets of many radio-controlled rigs. The interior gallery pages feature images from the first gathering of Dutch Aerial Eye subscribers. Brooks was kind enough to include one of my Goldsmith Seeds images on the back cover.

Vol. 4, No. 4, Fall 1998 (55K jpg)

Issue sixteen marks the end of an era. This is the last issue assembled by Brooks Leffler, the Aerial Eye's inaugural editor, contributor of particularly lucid articles, exemplary photographer (see Spring 98 cover above), database manager, and graphic pressman. The Aerial Eye has been a great and thoughtful gift from Brooks, let's give him a hearty three cheers -- hurrah, hurrah, hurrah!

The issue, returning to 32 pages, is a dandy. From the fine cover shot by Monsees to the interior articles on KAP transmitters (including another exemplary article by Leffler) the issue is a memorable way to conclude a fine production run. Thanks again Brooks.
